Job Overview
The Credit Risk Analyst is responsible for monitoring on a timely basis the ongoing financial health of an assigned loan portfolio and/or collaborating with other Credit team members with requisite portfolio management tasks. The role is also responsible for underwriting or collaborating on underwriting activities related to new and existing credit transactions with low to moderate complexity including annual reviews, client diligence, and the required analysis and preparation of the underwriting package.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Underwriting and portfolio management activities for Valley’s direct and indirect exposure primarily to other banks, secondarily to life insurance companies, and occasionally to other types of entities. This is a specialized role within Valley’s Counterparty and Correspondent Bank Credit Team; it is not a commercial loan underwriting or portfolio management role. Exposures and/or entities managed include:
- Deposits (domestic and foreign) with correspondent banks
- Interest rate swaps with banks and other financial institutions
- Balances on loans participations purchased from and service by banks and other financial institutions
- Unfunded commitments from bank and other financial institution participants in loan participations sold/syndications led by Valley.
- Issuers of Bank-Owned Life Insurance policies
- Issuers of life insurance policies with cash surrender value pledged as loan collateral
- Maintains oversight via internal reporting and dashboards of all ongoing portfolio monitoring requirements and annual reviews. In coordination with the business team, coordinates client follow up as needed for account monitoring and administration.
- Completes financial statement spreads and conducts research on industries/markets. Escalates issues to appropriate levels and develops action plans as necessary.
- Ensures credits are accurately risk rated and are properly monitored and reported.
- Collaborates on preparation of all required quarterly reports and analysis.
- Underwrites new prospective transactions as well as renewals, extensions, increases, and material modifications and amendments for existing clients.
- Participates in external client meetings as well as internal deal team discussions and approval discussions with senior management.
- Performs the required due diligence and analysis, produces the credit presentation in accordance with guidelines and policy while ensuring timely completion of the underwriting, and presents credit requests to the required level of credit authority.
- Participates in special projects and requests related to the management of the portfolio.
Required Skills:
- Knowledge of credit underwriting, financial accounting and loan documentation.
- Knowledge of how a deal should be structured and comfortability with conversing this structure to lenders.
- Proficient computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Strong level of interpersonal and social skills needed to interact with loan officers, administrative staff and customers.

Required Experience:
- High School diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a commercial lending environment in a credit-oriented and underwriting position.
Preferred Experience:
- Bachelor's degree and completion of a formal credit training program.
